Vol. 118 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portaleen Pier (Donegal).

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that five motor fishing boats were lost at Portaleen Pier, County Donegal, in the recent storm; and, if so, whether he will extend the pier and erect a shelter wall to protect boats against future storms.

I am aware of the regrettable occurrence referred to by the Deputy. The improvement works for Portaleen mentioned in my reply to the Deputy on 23rd February, 1949, have been discussed with officials of the Donegal County Council and representatives of the local fishermen, and as a result a recommendation has been made by my Department that provision for a State grant towards the outlay involved be made in the Estimates for 1950-51, provided the county council also contributes.

I must, however, remind the Deputy of the contents of the answer to a similar question he put on February 23rd, 1949, when it was pointed out that full provision for safety is not practical at this place, and the present proposed works, while improving amenities, cannot be depended upon to remove risks in exceptionally rough weather.
