Vol. 118 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Store Street Building.

asked the Taoiseach whether the Government have decided to acquire the new Córas Iompair Éireann building at Store Street, Dublin; and, if so, whether he will state what it is proposed to make of (a) the portion of the premises designed as a central bus station, and (b) the remainder of the premises.

The Deputy is, no doubt, aware that Córas Iompair Éireann recently indicated that they did not now require the premises at Store Street for use as a central bus terminus and administrative offices. In view of this fact, and as the Department of Social Welfare is in urgent need of more suitable and centralised accommodation for a Dublin staff which at present numbers approximately 1,300 and is spread over 13 buildings in Dublin, the Government have authorised the Minister for Social Welfare to take steps to purchase the Store Street premises for use as a central office for the Department of Social Welfare. This will enable the buildings at present occupied by the Department to be made available or disposed of for other purposes. The entire premises at Store Street will be used by the Department, the intention being that the ground-floor section should be adapted for office use.
