Vol. 118 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief of Flooding.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the cause of the delay in initiating schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, for the relief of flooding in (a) Mallow; and (b) Kanturk, County Cork.

the question of preparing proposals under the Local Authorities (Works) Act is a matter for each local authority.

Five schemes under the Act have already been approved for execution by the Mallow Urban District Council. Two of these are in progress. The others are held up through shortage of labour. A scheme submitted by the county council and located in this area is at present awaiting the outcome of negotiations which are in progress with the owners of affected property. One scheme has been submitted for Kanturk, but the work cannot be undertaken at present owing to the high level of the river involved in the work.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state if it was possible for the engineer in charge to carry out this work in September of this year and that it was due to his neglect that the work was not started?

I would not like to offer an opinion on that.
