Vol. 118 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prosecutions by Gardaí.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that members of the Garda Síochána have been censured by their superior officers because of the fact that few or no prosecutions have been brought in the courts by any individual Garda, without reference to whether the condition of affairs in the Garda's area warranted the bringing of such prosecutions or not; and, if so, whether he has given approval to this procedure.

I have not given approval for the practice referred to by the Deputy nor am I aware that it exists. It has never been the practice in the Garda Síochána to judge a member's efficiency solely by the number of prosecutions for which he is responsible.

If I can refer the Minister to cases where this has occurred, will he see that steps are taken to discontinue that policy on the part of the officers concerned?

I am prepared to inquire into that matter.
