Vol. 118 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Jamestown Flooding.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that considerable damage is caused by flooding in the region north of Jamestown, and that much of this flooding is attributed to the presence of a water dam at Jamestown; and, if so, whether he will take steps to have this matter remedied.

The weir at Jamestown is one of the Shannon navigation works which the Commissioners of Public Works are statutorily bound to maintain. Its purpose is to provide an adequate depth for navigation. When the level of the Shannon rises beyond the level required for navigation the sluices in the weir are opened to mitigate flooding as far as possible.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that this particular portion is not used at all at the moment for the purposes of navigation? There is no navigation whatever.

I am not so aware.
