Vol. 118 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cobh Landing Facilities.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether any decision has yet been arrived at regarding the improvement of facilities for passengers embarking and disembarking at Cobh.

The Government, having considered the report of the committee set up to inquire into passenger handling facilities at Cobh, have decided that it is essential that these facilities should be improved and that the only satisfactory way of improving them is by having a comprehensive scheme of reconstruction undertaken. The scheme favoured by the Government is one for the extension of the existing deepwater quay, necessary reclamation work and the construction of a new Customs shed with a waitingroom properly heated and lighted and suitably equipped and furnished. A preliminary estimate of the cost of these works has been made and arrangements are now being made for trial borings to verify the estimate of cost. Discussions will take place next week with the Cork Harbour Commissioners with a view to getting the reconstruction works started in the near future.

While I am very glad to learn that the Minister intends to improve the amenities at Cobh, I wonder could be give an assurance that this work will be carried out in time for the 1950 tourist season?

I could not give any assurance of course that it will be completed but I think I can give the Deputy an assurance that the work will be commenced.
