Vol. 118 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Restrictions.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is proposed to remove the present restrictions on building.

There are no restrictions at present on the erection of houses by local authorities or on the erection of houses which qualify for subsidy under the Housing Acts. Other essential building work is also permitted, and the purpose and effect of the present restrictions is, therefore, to prevent the dissipation of our resources on non-essential work.

I can see no prospect of being able to recommend the removal of control until either the housing shortage becomes less acute than it is at present or the supply of the necessary materials and the requisite skilled labour becomes adequate to meet the demand.
