Vol. 118 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Nutritional Requirements.

asked the Minister for Health whether, in connection with the present inquiry into nutritional standards, he proposes to have issued for general guidance a statement as to the minimum nutritional requirements, as represented by everyday foods, which are considered necessary from a medical point of view to maintain in normal health an average Irish family.

The importance of a balanced diet for the maintenance of health and the most suitable foods for this purpose were stressed in a series of six instructional advertisements published widely in the Press in July-August last by my Department. Information prepared by the former Department of Local Government and Public Health as a guide to wholesome diet is available in a publication entitled "Cookery Notes" issued by the Department of Agriculture.

The further steps to be taken to familiarise the public with the lessons of the dietary survey recently carried out by my Department will be considered when all the information collected during the survey has been examined.
