Vol. 118 No. 14

Written Answers. - Barley Prices.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that a large number of farmers in County Dublin had to sell their barley at under £2 per barrel while the price to breweries was 57/6; and, if so, whether he will consider recouping their losses to these farmers.

Farmers generally were advised by public announcements last spring that there would be no control on the price of barley of the 1949 crop and that a cash market for malting barley was assured only in cases in which sale contracts had been made with industrial users. The suggestion that growers who may have sold barley at less than the top price for firstquality malting barley should receive the difference from public funds is one that could not be entertained.
