Vol. 118 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Vocational Classes for Aran Islands.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the people living on the Aran Islands would welcome vocational night classes for the teaching of the rudiments of navigation together with net making and net mending; and, if so, whether he will take steps to initiate such classes.

Occasional short courses of instruction in net making and mending have been provided previously on the islands by the County Galway Vocational Education Committee; it is understood that the committee have in mind the organisation of two further courses in these subjects in the current session.

I have had discussions with representatives of the County Galway Vocational Education Committee regarding the establishment of a new technical school at Kilronan, Inishmore, and preliminary steps have already been taken with a view to providing such a school. In addition to providing day classes for young people over 14 years of age the committee propose to have courses for adults which will, I understand, include instruction in net making and mending and in nautical subjects.
