Vol. 118 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Dublin Tenement.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether the premises No. 19 Constitution Hill, Broadstone, Dublin, which were occupied by tenants until recently, have been converted into a factory since the eviction of the tenants; and if he will ascertain whether the facts have been reported to the Dublin Corporation; and, if they have, if he will state what action has been or will be taken by the corporation to deal with the matter and to house the evicted tenants.

I have been informed by the Dublin Corporation that the premises, 19 Constitution Hill, which comprised a public house with living accommodation, have now been converted into a furniture factory. The corporation have rehoused the larger of the two families formerly residing on the premises. The second family consisted of only two persons who, it is understood, were ejected for non-payment of rent. Having regard to the prior claims to consideration of the numbers of large families living in overcrowded or unhealthy conditions the corporation cannot at present undertake to provide housing accommodation for the latter family.

Is the Minister aware that the premises in which these two families were living two years ago were condemned by the corporation; that the coropration moved both families into a different portion of the house; that they were later removed as trespassers; that they did not refuse to pay rent, but that the landlord refused to accept it; that one of these families is now walking the streets and that the corporation refused to give them either a room or a house?

I am not so aware.

In view of Deputy Fitzpatrick's supplementary will the Minister consider the matter and try to get the corporation to house this family which is now walking the streets?
