Vol. 118 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sanitary Accommodation at Ballyboden.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will insist that when it is necessary for directors of building schemes to interefere with sanitary accommodation, as has occurred in Ballyboden, alternative accommodation will be found at once; if he will state whether an official directing the building scheme at Ballyboden has been guilty of discourtesy towards some residents, including some women, whose privacy has been disturbed; finally, if he will state whether an official of the local authority remarked to a complainant on this matter that if the sanitary arrangements now existing in Ballyboden were good enough for their ancestors, they were adequate for the present inhabitants.

I do not think it necessary to issue any general instruction on this matter. In the particular case referred to I understand that it was necessary for a contractor to enter on the gardens of a number of houses and to demolish a number of earth closets. Temporary alternative accommodation has been provided. I have no further information on the matter.

Is the Minister not going to answer the last part of the question? Is he aware that a very responsible official made this assertion to some persons? Are we to take it that only lip service is to be paid to the requirements of these people who live there?

Alternative accommodation has been provided. The sanitary accommodation was removed in the course of building work. It is only a temporary matter.

Is the Minister aware that there is no accommodation for women to protect them from the eyes of passers-by when they have to go to these places?
