asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will request Bord na Móna to increase the production of turf in Meenleitrim Bog, County Kerry, this year in order to meet the heavy unemployment in that district.

I am informed that Bord na Móna do not propose to continue the production of turf in Meenleitrim Bog in 1950. It has been found from experience in 1948 and in 1949 that, because of the relatively high altitude of the bog, production of turf there is not economic. In regard to the unemployment aspect to which the Deputy refers, I may add that at the peak period last season employment was available for 30 men, but only 17 were procurable.
