Vol. 119 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Display of National Flag.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state why the national flag is not displayed on the aircraft operated by Aer Lingus and whether, in view of the fact that it is a State-subsidised undertaking, he will make representations to Aer Lingus to have the national flag so displayed

Aer Lingus do not display the national flag on their aircraft. It is not the general practice of airlines to display national flags on commercial aircraft. Some companies have the national colours painted on the fuselage; others use a civil air ensign. The nationality of Aer Lingus aircraft must be obvious to everyone, as they carry the Irish registration letters E.I., the name of the company, which is Irish, is painted on the aircraft, there is the name of an Irish saint painted on each aircraft, and there are green stripes and shamrocks on the aircraft.

The company flag, a shamrock on a white background, is flown by Aer Lingus aircraft when on the ground, both in home and foreign airports. I do not consider it necessary to make representations to Aer Lingus in the matter.
