Vol. 119 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repairs to Dublin County Council Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that it is impossible for the Dublin County Council to attend to all the complaints received by them regarding repairs to council cottages in the county; and, if so, whether he will consider making an allowance or grant to the tenants to enable them to have these necessary repairs attended to themselves.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that over 2,000 council cottages in County Dublin are in need of repairs; and, if so, whether he will take steps to have this urgent work carried out as soon as possible.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to reply to Questions Nos. 40 and 41 together.

The county council is responsible for keeping its housing property in good repair and for providing the maintenance organisation requisite for that purpose. The cost of this service is met by the local authority. There are no funds at my disposal out of which grants for repairs could be made to the tenants. I understand that proposals for the speeding up of cottage repairs in the county will be put before the county council in the very near future.
