Vol. 119 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Telephones for Sub-Post Offices.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state whether it is proposed to install a public telephone in the sub-post office at Dungarvan, Thomastown, County Kilkenny; and, if so, when it is proposed to proceed with the work.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when his Department intend to install a telephone in Rossinver Post Office, County Leitrim, in view of the fact that the nearest telegraph office is over four miles away, that the people in the area are badly handicapped for want of telegraphic facilities and that Rossinver was one of the rural post offices which were promised priority in this respect after the emergency was over.

I propose with the permission to an Ceann Comhairle to answer Questions Nos. 28 and 29 together.

Work on the Department's scheme to install a telephone in every post office has now been resumed.

The order in which call offices will be installed must necessarily be based on engineering considerations in order to provide for the most expeditious clearance of the work.

Rossinver and Dungarvan (Thomastown) are not included in the programme for the next 12 months.

The provision of telegraph facilities at post office where such are warranted must await the installation of the telephone service.
