Vol. 119 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Primary Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether any proposals reached his Department in connection with the building of a national school at Killahan, Abbeydorney, County Kerry; and, if so, when it is proposed to start building work.

The Department has been in correspondence with the manager with a view to the erection of a new school to replace the present defective Killahan National School, Abbeydorney, County Kerry, but certain preliminary arrangements have still to be completed before a grant can be sanctioned towards the cost of the new building.

I am not at present in a position to say when these arrangements will be completed or when it will be possible to commence work on the erection of the new school.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the Glasheen Boys' National School, Cork, is in a very dilapidated condition with completely inadequate amenities for the school boys, and if he will state when it is proposed to have a new building erected.

I am not aware that Glasheen Boys' National School is in a very dilapidated condition. The building is overcrowded and I am advised that the premises fall short of modern standards. Until an examination of the case now proceeding has been completed, I am not in a position to say in what way the problem can best be solved, but I hope that it will be possible to arrive at a decision in the matter without undue delay.

asked the Minister for Education if he is yet in a position to state when building will commence on the proposed new national schools at (1) Ballincollig; (2) Kilmurry, and (3) Knocknamanna, Minane Bridge, County Cork.

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that the working drawings and specification for the proposed new Ballincollig national schools are almost completed, but that bills of quantities will have to be prepared before the commissioners will be in a position to invite tenders. It is expected that the official lease vesting the site in trustees will be executed at an early date.

Agreement has been reached with the managers in regard to the local contributions to be provided towards the cost of the proposed new national schools at Kilmurry and Knocknamanna. Certain arrangements have, however, still to be made as regards the production of evidence of title to the sites, so as to enable the plots to be vested in trustees, before grants towards the cost of the new buildings can be sanctioned.

I am unable to say, at present, when it may be possible to commence work on the erection of the new schools.
