Vol. 120 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emlaghmore Creamery Stop.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the necessity for a creamery stop at Emlaghmore, County Kerry; and, if so, whether he will arrange to have one provided at the earliest possible date.

The Dairy Disposal Company, at my request, recently undertook a comprehensive survey of the whole of the Cahirciveen peninsula. As a result of this survey, the conclusion was reached that the Emlaghmore district is reasonably well served by existing creamery facilities, and that a travelling creamery stop could be provided in that district only at the expense of other districts less favourably situated.

Would the Minister clarify that by saying which district it would operate against; would it be detrimental to any adjacent areas, such as Ballinskelligs? Did I understand the Minister to suggest that the establishment of a stop at Emlaghmore would be detrimental to Ballinskelligs?

I am not in a position to say what other stops, if any, would have to be abandoned. The Deputy understands the number of travelling creameries available is limited. The area which each of them can cover is limited. Therefore, if you add a stop, and all the travelling creameries are at present working to capacity, you must at once survey that creamery area in order to eliminate some other stop. I do not know what other stop would have to be eliminated, but certainly one or more would have to be eliminated if Emlaghmore was catered for.
