Vol. 120 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation to Milk Producers.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state to what extent, in what manner and when he proposes to compensate milk-producer retailers, and milk retailers who have built up a substantial business in Cork City area over a number of years, in the event of the introduction of compulsory pasteurisation and the granting of a monopoly of the milk trade in Cork to a particular body.

There are no grounds for compensation, as producer-retailers and retailers would be at liberty to purchase from the pasteurising depot supplies of pasteurised milk (in bottle) at a price which would give them a fair margin of profit on resale, and they should not, therefore, be under any disadvantage as a result of pasteurisation.
