Vol. 120 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Abbeyleix Cemetery.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that no new graves are available at the town cemetery in Abbeyleix, County Laoighis, for some time past and that many persons residing in the town are compelled to bury their dead relations in graveyards situated three to five miles away; and, if so, if he will state whether financial provision was made some time ago for the acquisition of a suitable site for a new cemetery adjacent to the town, and if he will state the cause of the delay in preparing it.

A new burial ground is required at Abbeyleix and the local authority has decided to provide one and to meet the cost by way of loan. As it has not been found possible to secure a suitable site by agreement, the local authority proposes to have recourse to compulsory acquisition.

Is the Minister aware that the local authority in this instance proposed to acquire for a graveyard a field beside the Abbeyleix hospital? Would he consider that a suitable site?

Is the Minister aware that money was allocated for the provision of a new cemetery over a year ago, and will he inquire from the county manager what is the cause of the delay?
