Vol. 120 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Commission of Inquiry.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is yet in a position to promulgate the findings of the commission of inquiry which he set up some months ago in connection with the alleged victimisation of members of the Garda Síochána during the years 1932 to 1948.

The Deputy is mistaken in thinking that the setting up of a commission of inquiry is the form the investigation has taken. There has been no such commission but merely a departmental examination of cases in which allegations of victimisation were made to me.

My report will be made to the Government at an early stage.

Did the Minister not give me to understand that there would be a commission of inquiry into these cases?

I believe I did use the term "commission of inquiry", but a commission of inquiry can be departmental as well as public.

It will be like the Roe Commission.

It will be like the one you held in 1933.
