Vol. 120 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Laoighis and Offaly Estates.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire the remainder of the Mitchell estate, Grogan, Errill, County Laoighis, for the relief of congestion in the area.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the lands of Rathnasleugh, formerly owned by Mr. William Mitchell. The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of these lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state what steps the Land Commission have taken to acquire the lands of Messrs. William and Michael Delaney, Cannakill, Daingean, County Offaly, for the relief of congestion in the area.

Proceedings have been instituted for the acquisition of these lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire any portion of the lands of Mr. M. Moore, Sunville, Edenderry, County Offaly, for the relief of congestion.

The Land Commission decided not to resume these lands.

Could the Minister say if this man's political affiliations were taken into consideration when a decision of this nature was arrived at? Could the Minister also give the House an idea of the discussions he has had with Mr. Moore concerning these lands?

The political affiliations of an individual never influence the Land Commission in the taking of land. I think the Deputy himself was present and heard that Mr. Moore asked——

That is the second time I have had to reprimand the Minister on this point. I was never with the Minister and Mr. Moore on this issue.

I presume the Deputy refers to the occasion of a public meeting at which Mr. Moore approached me and made representations to the effect that this land should be taken over. These representations were passed on to the Land Commission and were received in the same way as all such representations are.

Is it not a fact that Mr. Moore is an outstanding and active supporter of this Government? Was that not taken into consideration?

That has nothing to do with it.

With Deputy Davin's permission, I propose to raise this matter on the Adjournment.

The political affiliations of Mr. Moore will not arise on the Adjournment.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to acquire any portion of the estate of Captain Bennett, Clareen, Birr, County Offaly, for the relief of congestion in the area.

It is not possible to identify this estate from the information furnished.
