Vol. 120 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Electricity Supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there is grave dissatisfaction in the district around Cappawhite, County Tipperary, by reason of the delay by the Electricity Supply Board in providing these districts with current under the rural electrification scheme; and, if so, whether he will take the matter up with the Electricity Supply Board with a view to having the matter dealt with expeditiously.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Cappawhite area has been canvassed and the area networks have been designed and costed. The area was considered for selection last month, but the estimated financial return was not sufficiently good to ensure selection. I am also informed that the area will be considered again during the present year when, with the development of adjacent areas now in progress, it is expected that its prospects of selection will have improved.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there is grave dissatisfaction in the area of Mount Brins, Tipperary, by reason of the delay by the Electricity Supply Board in dealing with the application of the residents of that area for connection with current under the rural electrification scheme; and, if so, whether he will take the matter up with the Electricity Supply Board with a view to having the matter dealt with expeditiously.

I assume the area to which the Deputy refers is Mount Bruis, which is included in the Glen of Aherlow rural area. I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that this area has been canvassed and the area network designed and costed. It appears the area was recently considered for selection in competition with other adjacent areas, but the financial return was not sufficiently good to ensure selection.

I am also informed that the area will be considered again during the present year, but that unless the returns have improved in the meantime its prospects of selection are not regarded by the board as very good.
