Vol. 120 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Kerry Embankments.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware of the urgent necessity for repairing the river and sea embankments on the Godfrey, Marshall, Wrenn and Ventry estates, County Kerry; and whether he is now in a position to make a definite statement in the matter.

The Land Commission sanctioned a grant for the repair of the embankments in Callanafercy East and Callanafercy West on the condition that the benefiting land-owners would contribute towards the work. As the beneficiaries in Callanafercy East made the required contribution, the embankment in that townland has been repaired. The repair of the other embankment cannot be proceeded with as the land-owners affected are not prepared to shoulder their responsibilities and contribute towards the work.

As regards the other embankments the Land Commission are considering the question of granting assistance towards the necessary repairs, but a decision has not yet been reached.

I might add that the Land Commission have no liability for the repair or maintenance of these embankments.
