Vol. 120 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Cost of Milk Conveyance in Kerry.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the cost of conveying milk in the areas of Cromane, Caragh Lake and Glencutane, would be excessive and whether he would contribute towards the cost of the scheme.

I have no fund at my disposal from which I could make a contribution towards the cost of conveying milk to creameries. I would suggest, however, that the milk producers concerned might approach the Dairy Disposals Company with a view to discussing some mutually suitable arrangement.

Might I suggest that the Minister use his good offices with the Dairy Disposals Board to assist us in getting the board to bear portion of this cost? The suggested transport system would involve great expense on the smallholders who reside in these congested districts, and probably it would cost them about 2d. per gallon for transport. If the Dairy Disposals Board would co-operate, in so far as that they would defray half of the cost, the people would appreciate it very much.

Would the Deputy not advise the people to adopt the course I suggest, to have a preliminary canter with the Dairy Disposals Company, and we can return to the charge hereafter in the light of that discussion?
