Vol. 120 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Limerick Housing.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the scheme of 12 houses in course of erection at Abbeyfeale will not satisfy the total housing requirements of this town, and whether, in view of this, he will sanction the use of a site acquired by the Limerick County Council at Mount Mahon, Abbeyfeale, for housing development, embodying in the plans provision for water and sewerage facilities so that the maximum number of houses can be built on this site.

As indicated in my reply to a previous question in the matter, the 12-house scheme now in course of erection was calculated to meet the housing needs of Abbeyfeale, according to the survey carried out by the Limerick County Council. I understand that a fresh survey of the needs of all areas in County Limerick is now in progress and the question of additional houses for this village will depend on the results of that survey.

A proposal to utilise the site at Mount Mahon for housing purposes was submitted by the council who were requested to furnish reports by the county medical officer of health and the county engineer on the site. The reports were received on the 3rd of this month and the proposal is at present being examined. A decision in the matter will be expedited.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present position in regard to the proposed housing schemes for Foynes, Askeaton, Adare and Kildimo.

The position in regard to the proposed schemes referred to by the Deputy is as follows:—

(1) Foynes: The acquisition of a site was approved on the 22nd March, 1950. Detailed information in respect to the lay-out for the proposed scheme has been requested and when that information is received a decision on the plans for the scheme will be expedited.

(2) Askeaton: I understand that the council are negotiating for the purchase of a site.

(3) Adare: I understand that the council's efforts to secure a site by agreement have failed and that the question of acquiring a site compulsorily will be considered in conjunction with a proposed further compulsory purchase order.

(4) Kildimo: The council propose, as part of their housing programme, to erect ten houses. I understand that no site is available by agreement and the question of acquiring a site compulsorily will be considered in conjunction with a proposed further compulsory purchase order.

The activity of the Department seems to be in slow motion.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present position in regard to the proposal to erect rural cottages on sites offered by Miss Shire, Courtmatrix, Rathkeale; Mr. Cornelius Magner, Coolanoran, Rathkeale; Mr. George Ruttle, Ballingarrane, Rathkeale; Mr. Patrick Fitzgerald, Cappagh, Rathkeale; Colonel White, Nantenan, Rathkeale; Mrs. Jermyn, Ballingarrane, Rathkeale; Mr. Michael Bourke, Duxtown, Rathkeale; Mr. Joseph Keogh, Killeline, Newcastle West; Mr. James Lynch, Ballycurrane, Patrickswell, and Mr. William O'Donnell, Clarina.

The position in regard to the sites referred to by the Deputy is as follows:—

(a) The sites offered by Mr. C. Magner, Coolanoran; Miss Shire, Courtmatrix; Mr. George Ruttle, Ballingarrane, and Mr. Michael Bourke, Duxtown, are now transferred to the council. I understand that the council's engineer expects to commence work on the erection of these cottages in the near future.

(b) The acquisition of the sites offered by Mr. William O'Donnell, Clarina, and Mr. Patrick Fitzgerald, Cappagh, has been approved and I understand the council's law agent is investigating title in these cases.

(c) The acquisition of the sites offered by Colonel White, Mr. Joseph Keogh, Killeline, and Mr. James Lynch, Ballycurrane, was approved on the 8th instant.

(d) No proposal in regard to the site offered by Mrs. Jermyn, Ballingarrane, has yet been submitted for approval.
