Vol. 121 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Living.

asked the Taoiseach if he will indicate to Dáil Eireann what steps the Government is now taking to effect a reduction in the cost of living and if he will now state what reductions in prices of essential commodities it is proposed to effect within the next eight weeks.

I would refer the Deputy to the very full replies I gave in this House to the questions on the same subject which were asked by him on the 1st December, 1948, and the 23rd March last.

As regards the second part of the question, the position is that it is not practicable to indicate what particular commodities will be the subject of price reductions in any period of eight weeks ahead. The situation in regard to every essential commodity—as well as many commodities that are not classified as essential—is being kept constantly under review by the Departments concerned, and the necessary action to effect price reductions is taken immediately when the circumstances of the particular case justify that course.

Will the Taoiseach say whether he is aware that to-day in Dublin some of the shopkeepers have put up the price of cooked ham?
