Vol. 121 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of River Feorish.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the necessity for the drainage of the River Feorish and if he will make the necessary arrangements with the three county councils concerned, viz., those of Sligo, Roscommon and Leitrim, to have this work done under the Local Authorities (Works) Act.

My policy in regard to the operation of the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, is to leave the selection of suitable works in the hands of the local authorities. Any arrangement for joint action in the case of any particular scheme should, therefore, be initiated by the local authorities concerned. As I indicated to the Deputy in my reply of the 21st March last, I am not aware of any such joint scheme for the River Feorish. I am approving of a simple scheme submitted by the Roscommon County Council for the clearance of obstructions in the section of the river in that county. I have also approved a similar scheme in relation to a tributary of the river in County Sligo. The proposal relating to the main channel of the river in County Sligo, however, presents various difficulties and would require detailed survey and examination by both county councils before it could be considered.
