Vol. 121 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stone Masons.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in reference to (1) County Dublin, and (2) the whole country (a) the total number of stone masons, and (b) the number at present employed.

The exact information required by the Deputy is not available but as bearing generally on the subject of his inquiry the following information is supplied. The number of masons, stone-cutters and stone-layers insured on 2nd October, 1949, under the Insurance (Intermittent Unemployment) Act, 1942 (i.e., manual workers in the building trade) was 1,347 of whom 103 were recorded at local offices of the Department of Social Welfare situated in County Dublin. On the 10th June, 1950, the number of persons in these occupations registered as unemployed was 45 of whom eight were registered at local offices situated in County Dublin. These statistics do not include (i) monumental masons who are not insured under the Wet Time Act, or (ii) masons working on own account, employers or assisting relatives.
