Vol. 122 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Hospital Milk Samples.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) how many samples of milk supplied to Galway Central Hospital by a supplier, whose premises were inspected on the 5th instant, have been taken since 1st April, 1950, for analysis; (b) how many were taken from containers used by this supplier; (c) how many were taken from containers used by the central hospital; (d) how many of those at (b) were found to be deficient; (e) how many of those at (c) were so found; (f) how many of those at (b) and (c) respectively were the subject of conflicting reports, and (g) when and with what result were the dairy premises of the supplier in question last officially inspected.

According to the information obtained from the Galway County Council, who are responsible for the administration of the Milk and Dairies Act, 1935, in that area, the answers to the Deputy's inquiries are: (a), 32; (b), 25; (c), 5. Information as to the containers from which two of the samples were taken is not available; (d) and (e) none, if by "deficient" is meant a bacteriological content in excess of that permitted under the regulations; (f) none; it would appear that only one bacteriological report was furnished in respect of each sample taken; (g) the most recent official inspection of the supplier's dairy premises was that made on 5th June. As a result, one cow with suspicious udder induration was removed from the dairy herd, and the chief medical officer informed the supplier that the milk from this cow should not be sold for human consumption.
