Vol. 122 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Grant for Swimming Pool.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is prepared to make an appropriate grant for the erection of a swimming pool at Mitchelstown.

I have received no proposals from the Cork County Council or from any other local interests in this matter, and it is not the practice to promise the allocation of a grant in advance of the submission of definite proposals. So far as the present financial year is concerned, the funds available for sanitary services schemes are fully earmarked for a very extensive programme of water and sewerage schemes. That programme includes a major sewerage scheme for Mitchelstown which must have priority over any amenity proposal.

Would the Minister indicate to the North Cork Committee of Health and Assistance that those grants are not available at the moment, as they invited a big scheme to supply swimming pools as far as possible to all the big towns?

No proposal of any kind has been received from the local authority, nor has any intimation been received from any committee that they would be prepared to make a contribution. Deputy Keane's question is the first one that has been raised in regard to Mitchelstown.
