Vol. 122 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Telephone Kiosk.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that there are now more than 120 houses at Tolka, Finglas; and, if so, whether, in view of the fact that the nearest telephone available to the tenants is two miles distant, he will review the decision conveyed in his reply to a question on the 7th March last, when there were only 44 houses in the area, and have a kiosk provided there in the immediate future.

Building development in the Tolka estate area has not yet reached the stage which would warrant the erection of a telephone kiosk. The matter will be reviewed at the end of the year or earlier if there should be any further appreciable advance in building operations there.

Is the Minister aware that there are 120 families living on this scheme; that if it becomes necessary to call a doctor or a priest urgently there is no means of contacting them quickly; that if a disturbance arose the police could not be called quickly? As the Minister will appreciate, this is a particularly large housing scheme and, in view of the urgency of the matter, will he be prepared to provide a telephone kiosk without further delay?

The Deputy's statement that the nearest telephone available to the residents at Tolka estate is two miles distant is not correct. The telephone kiosks at Finglas village, Ballymun Road and Cross Guns Bridge, Glasnevin, are within one mile of the Tolka estate. There are only 120 houses on the estate at present. I can assure the Deputy that I will give the matter every consideration at the end of the year.
