Vol. 123 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post Office Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Finance whether his attention has been directed to a resolution regarding wages and conditions adopted by the Post Office Workers' Union, and if he will state whether the wage levels and conditions have changed since 18th February, 1948.

I have seen Press reports of resolutions of this character.

Since the date mentioned the remuneration of all Post Office employees has been substantially improved. As from 29th May, 1948, officials with not more than £350 a year were granted increases as follows:—

Adult male, 11/- a week;

Women and juveniles, 5/6 a week;

Part-time officers, pro-rata.

Those with pay in excess of £350 a year benefited in the general adjustment of Civil Service pay as from 1st November, 1948.

As from 1st April, 1949, the reduced rates of pay which had been prescribed for officers recruited subsequent to 1st January, 1947, or from competitions for which the conditions of service had not been announced before 1st January, 1947, were abolished.
