Vol. 123 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Boyne and Blackwater Drainage.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that no satisfactory minor drainage or land reclamation scheme can be carried out in County Meath unless the Boyne and Blackwater drainage scheme is first undertaken, and if he will state whether the final survey of those rivers has been completed with a view to their drainage; and, further, if he will indicate when main drainage on these rivers will commence.

A survey of the rivers to which the Deputy refers for the purpose of formulating a drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945, has not yet been made. It is not possible to say when such a scheme can be undertaken.

As this is one of the rivers mentioned in the reply to an earlier question by the Minister for Agriculture, would the Parliamentary Secretary say how his Department came to know of the places in which the obstructions which are about to be removed existed?

We found it out from the Department of Agriculture.

Who carried out the inspection? Can the Parliamentary Secretary say what responsibility the Department of Agriculture has for inspecting arterial drains?
