Vol. 123 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter for Children.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that many schools in the Kerry Gaeltacht are not now being provided with butter under the school meal scheme due to its increased price and whether, having regard to the nutritional value for children of this food, he will take steps to ensure that butter will be supplied for the purpose at the subsidised price.

I am not aware that butter is not being provided in many schools participating in the School Meals (Gaeltacht) Scheme in County Kerry. An increase in price should not necessarily result in the withdrawal of butter and I am having inquiry made regarding the matter.

The granting of permits for the supply of butter at the subsidised price is a matter for the Minister for Industry and Commerce.
