Vol. 123 No. 8

- County Dublin Cottage Rents.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that grave dissatisfaction exists amongst tenants of new cottages in County Dublin because of the present graded rents system, and if he will direct that a new system of rents be introduced to remove these hardships.

The answer to the first part of the question is "No". The present system of graded rents was approved provisionally and is subject to review at the end of the year. I understand that a report on the working of the system together with details of a differentiated scheme of rents will be placed before the council at an early date. The introduction of a new system or the amendment of the existing one is a matter for the local authority in the first instance.

Does the Minister consider that it is reasonable to expect the tenants of these cottages to pay a rent of 24/6 a week?

I would not be in a position to offer an opinion on that. After all, the scheme was considered and approved by the county council itself.
