Vol. 123 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Souvenirs.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, having regard to the representations made by the Cobh Urban Council and by Cobh traders who trade only in Irish souvenirs, lace and linen, he will make an order under Section 25 of the Shops (Hours of Trading) Act, 1938, revoking the order made in 1947 in so far as it relates to shops already established in the Cobh urban area to deal in souvenirs, lace and linen.

I have nothing to add to the replies given to the Deputy on this matter on the 26th of October and 23rd of November last.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary consider the advisability of not waiting for somebody from America to exploit the sale of this lace and linen there, so that other people who buy them will have an opportunity of displaying our wares? It is a ministerial Order.

Nobody from anywhere can exploit the people because they will not be permitted by the Act to trade.

In view of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply, I wish to give notice that I will raise this matter on the Adjournment—if not to-day, next week.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that, in the airport, these shops are allowed to be open all night and all day? There is one law for the fellows who go by plane and another for those who go by ship.
