Vol. 124 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Furniture Manufacturers' Requirements.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that manufacturers of furniture are finding great difficulty in purchasing wood screws and nails and that it is impossible for them to purchase even a small fraction of their requirements of bed irons in this country; and, if so, whether he will admit a quota of these articles free of duty or at a reduced duty, as there is grave danger that it will be impossible to purchase them abroad in the near future.

I am aware of the position regarding supplies of wood screws and nails. Officers of the Industrial Development Authority are discussing the matter to-day with the manufacturers, with a view to seeing what steps can or should be taken to ease the difficulty.

No representations have been made to me regarding a shortage of bed irons, but if the Deputy will furnish me with particulars of any individual cases which he has in mind, I will have the position examined at once.
