Vol. 124 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Port.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the amount of money that is to be spent on the development of Sligo Harbour and the demand of the people and cattle traders of the West of Ireland for improved facilities, he will request the Burns and Laird Steamship Company to arrange a weekly sailing from Sligo Port.

The question of providing new or improved shipping services at any particular port is a matter for arrangement between the commercial interests concerned and the shipping companies, and is not one in which the Minister for Industry and Commerce can usefully intervene.

It was indicated to my Department on various occasions by local interests that cattle shipments from Sligo would be resumed if a cattle lairage was provided and if the berths were dredged. These works were completed some time ago with the assistance of State grants. Further financial assistance is now being given towards the provision of other improved port facilities at Sligo.
