Vol. 125 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sole Leather Shortage.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a shortage of sole leather recently caused the temporary disemployment of some 200 operatives in the boot and shoe manufacturing industry in Cork; and, if so, if he will state whether the stocks and production of such leather are sufficient to ensure that such disemployment will not recur.

I am aware that a shortage of sole leather recently caused a temporary slackening of employment in a Cork boot factory. I am informed that the factory has now received sufficient sole leather to enable it to resume full production. It is understood that the destruction of one of the sole leather tanneries has resulted in some dislocation of supplies and the existing tanneries are making every effort to meet this shortage.
