asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what experimental research has been carried out by or under the direction of the Research Committee of the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards since the 31st March, 1950, to date, specifying the subjects of such research work and the number of university science or engineering graduates engaged thereon.

The following experimental research work has been undertaken by the Institute for Industrial Research and Standards in the period to which the Deputy refers:—

(1) A study of the factors leading to the deposition of tarry and resinous substances in the combustion of turf.

(2) The utilisation of seaweed as a source of sulphur compounds.

(3) The utilisation of oat hulls as a source of decolourising carbon.

(4) The solubilisation of rock phosphate.

Three university science graduates were engaged in the laboratory work.
