Vol. 125 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Temporary Postman.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state whether it is a fact that for the past 15 months a man named Mr. Shalvey has held the position of temporary postman at Wilkinstown Sub-Post Office, near Navan, that he also holds a position with the Electricity Supply Board, that there are five in his family all employed and that they have two farms of land fully stocked, as well as a hackney motor car, while Mr. Thomas Plunkett, an unemployed man and a former section leader in the Local Security Force, who resides with his father, also unemployed, has been an unsuccessful applicant for the position as postman already referred to; and, if so, whether he will make a statement on the matter.

Mr. Daniel Shalvey has been employed as a temporary part-time postman at Wilkinstown, An Uaimh, County Meath, since March, 1950, when a regular part-time postman became ill. Mr. Shalvey, who had previously been employed for short periods by the Department, was the only person available in the area for employment. No application was received from Mr. Plunkett until some months after the post had been filled, and I understand that at the time the post became vacant, he was employed by the Meath County Council.

Mr. Shalvey, since his appointment, has obtained part-time employment with the Electricity Supply Board to supplement his Post Office earnings.

I may perhaps add for the Deputy's information that Mr. Shalvey was a member of the L.D.F. from 1940 to 1946 and is at present a member of the F.C.A.
