Vol. 126 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Buildings.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the present position regarding the proposed new school buildings at Ballincollig and Kilmurry, Lissarda, County Cork.

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that bills of quantities for the proposed new schools to replace the present Ballin-colling Boys' and Girls' National Schools, County Cork, are being prepared and that it is expected that they will be completed within the next few weeks. As soon as the bills of quantities have been completed, the commissioners will advertise for tenders for the erection of the new schools.

Documentary evidence of title to the site for the proposed new school at Kilmurry, County Cork, has been furnished, and the Department awaits a report from the Chief State Solicitor as to whether the title is satisfactory for the purpose of enabling the site to be vested in trustees, by official lease. The necessary arrangements for the extension of the public water supply to the site have not, however, yet been made. The Department is endeavouring to have the matter settled as soon as possible. When this has been done, and provided that the evidence of title is regarded by the Chief State Solicitor as satisfactory, the Department will sanction a grant towards the cost of the new school.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state when work will commence on the building of Clonrye National School.

As a result of investigations which have been made, it has now been found that it will be feasible to provide water closets, with a septic tank system of sanitation, for the proposed new school at Clonrye. Certain arrangements as regards the production of evidence of title to an additional plot of ground which is required in order to enable water-flushed sanitation to be installed and also as regards the preparation of working drawings and specification for the new school have, however, still to be made before the Commissioners of Public Works will be in a position to advertise for tenders for the erection of the school.

While I am unable to say, at present, when building operations will be commenced, the Deputy may rest assured that all practical steps will be taken to have the remaining necessary preliminary arrangements completed as expeditiously as possible.

Does the Minister seriously put it to me that these stupid preliminaries have not yet been completed in connection with the building of this school? Is he further aware that, due to the state of this shambles, I shall seriously have to consider approaching the county medical officer of health with a view to its being closed down during the coming winter?

I presume that before the operation takes place, there must be a diagnosis.
