Vol. 126 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Postal Deliveries Reorganisation.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware that a recent reorganisation of postal deliveries has caused some inconvenience to the public in the Clara area; and, if so, whether he will have the matter investigated.

The recent reorganisation of postal services in Offaly has expedited the first delivery of correspondence in Clara by almost two hours and I do not think that this has caused any real inconvenience to the public. In fact, it has improved the delivery service in Clara and a big portion of the surrounding district to a considerable extent.

Wherever possible, it is the general practice to commence night mail delivery in rural areas at 7.30 a.m. and there have been no public complaints about this.

Is the Minister aware that, as a result of the reorganisation to which he refers, the post in certain areas is now being delivered an hour or two later than was the case prior to the reorganisation?

So far as I understand, on balance, the service is very much improved. The morning delivery is now completed in a number of areas in such a way as to enable the last delivery to be completed at 9.50 a.m. instead of 11.45 a.m.
