Vol. 126 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Monaghan Telephone and Postal Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider favourably the early installation of a public telephone in Scotshouse sub-post office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider favourably the early provision of a public telephone in Broomfield and Donaghmoyne sub-post offices.

It is the intention of the Department to install a telephone in every post office. As there are still about 700 offices to be dealt with—most of them in remote areas—the work will have to be spread over a number of years. So that the best progress may be made, the order in which call offices are installed is determined mainly on engineering considerations.

Broomfield, Donaghmoyne and Scotshouse are not included in the call office programme for the current financial year which has already been circulated. I regret that it is not possible, at this stage, to say when call offices will be provided at these places.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the great inconvenience to the people of a large area and particularly to old age pensioners due to the fact that Lisdoonan is without a sub-post office; and, if so, if he will provide such accordingly with public telephone facilities.

I regret that the amount of business likely to be transacted would not justify the expense involved in the establishment of a suboffice at Lisdoonan.
