Vol. 126 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Johnstown Castle (Wexford) Farm Workers.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will now grant a weekly half-holiday to the workers on the State Farm at Johnstown Castle, Wexford.

Mr. Walsh

The workers at Johnstown Castle Agricultural College are at present unwilling to work on the basis of a weekly contract of 54 hours a week and they are being paid at the hourly rate prescribed by the Agricultural Wages Board. They cease work at 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Is it not a fact therefore that because the workers at Johnstown Castle refused to work 54 hours a week they are denied their half-holiday?

Is the Minister not following exactly in the footsteps of his predecessor whom he denounced in this House on every possible occasion on this matter?

I do not think Deputy Corish will thank you for that.

You are mixed up between the widows.

Deputy Corish is not concerned with what Deputy Dillon did.

Mr. Walsh

I am afraid that Deputy Corish and Deputy Dunne have a wrong conception of the Agricultural Workers (Half-Holidays) Bill. It would be well for them to read it again
