Vol. 126 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compulsory Tillage.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in the light of his statement reported in Official Reports, Volume 126, No. 7, column 969, that "compulsory tillage was forced on the country as a result of the war and was continued subsequent to the cessation of hostilities on account of the general world conditions," he will state whether the statement contained in an advertisement entitled: "Fianna Fáil's plan for Agriculture," published in the public press in 1948, that compulsory tillage would form a permanent feature of Government policy ever represented the policy of the Government.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to the debate on the Estimate for my Department on 10th July, 1951, in which I made a clear statement of the position in relation to compulsory tillage.

Mr. O'Higgins

Can we take it from the Minister's reply that the statement contained in the Fianna Fáil plan for agriculture, published on 10th January, 1948, that compulsory tillage would be a permanent feature of agricultural policy never, in fact, represented the policy of the Government, and that it now represents a conversion by the Minister to his predecessor's policy?

Mr. Walsh

I have not seen that statement.

Mr. O'Higgins

I will send it over to the Minister for his education.
