Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electrical Workers' Strike.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the cause of the strike amongst the electrical workers of Córas Iompair Éireann and if any proposals are in hands to bring the dispute to an end.

I am informed by Córas Iompair Éireann that the electricians employed by Córas Iompair Éireann went on strike because a claim for higher wages which was made to the company on their behalf was not conceded. I understand that the claim was referred to the Labour Court and that the court has recommended terms on which the claim should be settled.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that the award has not been accepted by the men and will be follow the matter further to see that the dispute is brought to an end? It is not the first time an award of the Labour Court was rejected.

The Deputy can take it that it is my general policy not to intervene if the Labour Court has made a recommendation in any case.

Mr. Byrne

Is the lockout, strike or dispute to continue?

The Deputy must be aware that the particular recommendation of the Labour Court applied to many classes of workers in the service of Córas Iompair Éireann and that the only union which has not accepted is the electricians' union.
