Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Holidays.

asked the Minister for Education if he is prepared to give summer holidays to all schools under his jurisdiction for the months of June, July and August in the future; and if he will state what period in weeks is considered a reasonable period for summer holidays for school children.

The question of summer holidays in secondary schools is a matter for the authorities in those schools and I do not intend to interfere with the arrangements already in operation.

As regards holidays for primary schools, I have already on two occasions, in reply to questions from Deputies Palmer and Hickey, intimated that the whole matter is being examined but that I am not in a position to say when a decision is likely to be taken. The decision, when taken, will be an indication of the number of weeks which is considered a reasonable period for summer holidays for primary school children.
