Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Teachers' Salaries.

andMr. Palmer asked the Minister for Education if the scales of salaries of national teachers agreed upon by the conciliation council set up by his predecessor will be implemented by the Government; and, if so, at what date the first payments of the increased scales are likely to be made.

I have already publicly announced that the recommendations of the National Teachers' Conciliation Council in favour of improved scales of salaries and other emoluments have been accepted. Payment at the new rates will be made as soon as possible. It is intended that an instalment of the arrears of salary due will be issued before the middle of August and, if at all possible, I would hope that payments of arrears in respect of salary for the six months ending 30th September would be completed early in October and payments in respect of periods from the 1st October onwards made at the new rates of salary.

Is the Minister aware that there are at least 1,000 unmarried lay teachers in this country who are wholly dissatisfied with the new rates of pay?

That is a separate question.
